Color Consultation Tips
Choosing the right colors for your home or business might seem daunting! Not to worry, we’ll help guide you along the way to colors you can feel good about in your chosen space(s), that suit your personality and lifestyle.

Here are a few tips to note, prior to your appointment with your color consultant:

  • We consult using Sherwin Williams paints.

  • For in-person consultations (within Denver metro) - your color consultant will bring a variety of color swatches - some big, some small - to show you during the visit. At the end of the visit, we’ll leave you with the color names and four digit SW color code for each selected.

  • For virtual consultations (outside Denver metro) - your color consultant will call you at the scheduled time. It is best if you have access to a computer with internet, but it can still be done virtually if you do not. A combination of talking on the phone, texting, and using a specific website that pulls up Sherwin Williams colors will be used. Your color consultant will pull up your home/business online to see the exterior (for exterior paint jobs) during your appointment, and have the actual swatches next to them. Using all of these methods together gets the job done! Note: If you are outside the Denver metro and would like to pay an additional fee to have your consultant come to you, this is a potential option depending on the time of year, where you are located, and scheduling availability. The total roundtrip commute time is billed at the regular hourly rate, payable at the time of service.

  • For exterior consults, if you have an HOA, be sure to submit your final choices to the board for approval prior to advising your painting contractor. Some HOA’s have specific schemes you must choose from. Know what those are before your color consultant arrives, so an HOA acceptible scheme can be chosen. If you have a lenient HOA, or none at all - great!

  • For interior consults, you may find it helpful to have swatches/samples of any new finishes or furnishings you plan to add to the room for color matching (like new furniture being delivered).

  • If you plan to sell your home within the next five years, we recommend choosing more “marketable” colors to help you get the highest resale value when that time comes. If you plan to enjoy your home/space for well beyond that, paint it pink if you want! Do what makes you feel good in the space.

  • We do not see your signed contract with your painting contractor. It’s important to know how many colors are in on your bid, so we can choose the correct number of colors. It’s also important to discuss with your sales person if you plan to have a light color painted over a dark one, or a dark one painted over a light one - as these can affect your costs for the job. Certain colors require more coats to cover properly, and your painting contractor may have restrictions accordingly or need to adjust your bid.

  • We highly recommend that after you have selected colors, you pop over to Sherwin Williams, grab a sample quart of paint for each color, paint it on a board/cardboard, lay it against your house/wall, look at it in varying light conditions (sunny, cloudy, dawn, dusk, natural light, artificial light) to make sure you love it before they come paint your whole house! Some colors are more finicky than others, and can change tone depending on the lighting and what’s next to it.

  • Once you have submitted to your HOA and received approval (if applicable), and have done your test samples (as noted above) - reach out to your painting contractor and let them know what colors you have chosen so they can go buy your paint and complete your job. Give them the color names and the four digit color code for each color. You’ll also need to let them know which colors go where! This will be discussed in your consultation, but you’ll need to relay that information to the paint crew.

  • Please keep in mind we are an independent company contracted by your painting contractor to assist you with color selection. For specific questions about your paint job and scheduling it, you’ll need to speak with your respective sales representative. Their name and contact information should be on the contract you signed.

  • Your painting contractor covers up to the first hour of our color consultation together at no cost to you. Anything beyond the first hour is $150/hour (cash or credit/debit cards accepted) paid directly to us at the time of our visit, should you need extra design time. If you know you want extra design time, it’s best to schedule it in advance when possible. Most color consultations are completed within that one hour time frame, so not to worry!

  • We make every effort to arrive at your home/office at the scheduled time. However, there are times when traffic, accidents, weather conditions, or even a prior client appointment shifts that time a bit. If for some reason your color consultant encounters a delay (or can arrive early), you will be contacted by phone with an ETA accordingly.

  • We’re also available to assist with other interior design selections and finishes, if you desire. You’re welcome to book extra time for those, outside of the initial hour provided as complimentary by your painting contractor.
